Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming film.įor many talented directors, writers, and producers like del Toro, you tend to see repeat appearances of certain actors throughout their works. With a truly unique style of storytelling that showcases lush, fantastical worlds hiding dark secrets, del Toro is definitely one of the best directors working today, which is why many people are clamoring to know more about his next movie, Nightmare Alley, another dark period film with a carnival setting, focusing on the darker sides of humanity. While it may sound a bit crazy (as do the premises of other del Toro films), the movie wowed both audiences and critics and won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Some of you might be latecomers to the del Toro fan group (though just as welcome), having only seen his most recent film, The Shape of Water, which stars Sally Hawkins and Octavia Spencer in a 1960s-set story about a forlorn woman who falls in love with an amphibious man she rescues from a laboratory. No matter the subject matter, language, or stars of his movies, del Toro's work is always outstanding. Early on in his career, del Toro jumped back and forth between dark and complex Spanish-language films like Cronos, The Devil's Backbone, and arguably his most acclaimed film, Pan's Labyrinth, and sci-fi and comic book English-language films for Hollywood. The esteemed, Academy Award-winning director began his life and career in his home of Mexico, quickly making a name for himself through his skill at filmmaking. Most people who watch a lot of movies know or have at least heard of Guillermo del Toro. “A lot of his body gestures are derived from Gilbert's shrugs and his looks. “But we don't try to be influenced by that.” “Certainly, there is a lot of merchandising that goes on with these movies, and sometimes the merchandising people will say, ‘Jasmine should wear a pink dress, because a pink dress will sell more than a blue dress,’” Clements revealed. Jasmine’s dress was almost pink, with the prospect of selling more toys.Ī Disney film’s toy line has always been integral to its popularity and success, but Aladdin’s directors strived to focus on the story first. On Aladdin, we had between 12 and 20 animators working on him at the same time.”ĩ. “When you're animating a character that has a lot of inside emotion, it's always going to be more difficult,” Keane said, explaining that it’s easier to convey emotions with characters that have more extreme features. Aladdin was more difficult to animate than Beast. “And Aladdin, we wanted to have a little bit of that edge on him.”Ĩ. There was a cockiness to him,” said Keane. “I got the film and I looked at him, and what I noticed was all of his poses. We didn't quite know how improvisational he was going to be until out came all of the celebrity impressions,” said Goldberg. “When we finally got Robin into the recording studio, we wanted him to be improvisational. Williams does over 60 characters as Genie in the film. “They take it to the next level and they're the ones who do the six months of tedious, tedious work.”ĥ. What they do is, I kind of give an inspiration and then they go with it,” Williams told ET at the 1996 premiere of Aladdin and the King of Thieves. We wanted him to look like a wisp of smoke,” Goldberg added. “His body shapes were also generally based on large, curvy 'S' shapes. He was also designed with elegant curves to reflect the calligraphy and architecture of the period, which also provided Genie with his trademark array of expressions. A partial influence on that is the 1940 Thief of Baghdad film, where he kind of has that build.” “And we eventually arrived at the kind of strongman genie that we've got in the final film. “We had genies in turbans and vests and things like that,” Goldberg said of the animation team’s initial ideas for the character. Inspiration for Genie's design included The Thief of Baghdad and the letter “S.” “One thing that I really enjoy about Robin's performance is that we could have gotten any number of people who could do very slick impressions or who could do lots of funny schtick, but underlying it all is Robin's warmth in his performance,” said Eric Goldberg, the character’s supervising animator.Ĥ. “We wrote the script for Robin Williams from the beginning.” “Right from the start, we saw the Genie as a very special character in this movie, and the concept of him being able to change form constantly was there right from the start,” said co-director Ron Clements. The Genie was written for Robin Williams. “An artist could spend a week just trying to get a few seconds of a performance … If they can do that, that’s good,” Musker said of the animation team, which included 40 principals - more than on The Little Mermaid - who worked on the movie for nearly a year and a half.ģ. Still largely hand drawn, the animating process was lengthy, with five feet of film equating just a few seconds of screen time. It took a LONG time to complete the movie’s animation. “We saw Beauty and the Beast when it was completed last year at the wrap party and we just sort of just slumped down in our chairs, because we saw how good it was,” Aladdin co-director John Musker told ET at the time. It also became the first animated movie to ever be nominated a Best Picture Oscar - a feat not repeated until 2009 with Up - in addition to picking up a nomination for Best Sound and taking home two awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song. Beauty and the Beast set a high bar for success.Īt the time, Beauty and the Beast - the critically acclaimed film about an enchanted kingdom and the young woman who breaks its spell - was the first animated movie to gross over $100 million in North America, and was Disney’s most successful theatrical release. There's much more to Outlast 2's story than meets the eye. A tapestry woven from hallucinations, terror, and ghosts from his past. If Blake's mind was broken-and it did seem to be-perhaps the nightmarish visions became his new reality. Which brings us back to Lynn, the baby, and Knoth. Or, perhaps, paved the way for acceptance and peace. Guilt gnawing away at his conscience, coupled with the effects of the signals emanating from the radio tower, broke what remained of Blake's mind. He never forgot Jessica begging him to stay with her on the day she took her life. Sybil Catholic high school with Lynn and Jessica Gray, both of whom he was very close to. Although its meaning is up for debate, Blake willingly following Jessica and kneeling to pray alongside her can be seen as Blake giving in to his guilt over her suicide. As a child, Blake Langermann attended a St. Outlast 2's final scene is rife with symbolism. Jessica guides Blake to the kitchen where they used to play. /r/outlast is dedicated to Outlast, a first-person survival horror video game series developed and published Press J to jump to the feed. Jessica appears rope burns decorate her neck, evidence of her suicide. The background warps, changing into the school where he spent his youth. Visions of the Pastīlake leaves the bodies of Lynn and Knoth. If the baby is another hallucination, Blake and Knoth might share it. After imagining to her God ordering her to kill Blake Langermann, Marta relentlessly chases Blake down while Blake ventures through Temple Gate in search for his wife Lynn. Marta is a sinister member of the Testament of the New Ezekiel and is even feared amongst the cult members. Consider this, though: Knoth was exposed to the same radio signals that corrupted Blake's mind. Marta is the secondary antagonist of the 2017 survival horror video game Outlast 2. Knoth sees the baby, which seems to reinforce the notion that the baby was real. Could it be that the child was another in a long line of illusions? Blake's had more than his fair share of hallucinations. Whatever happened to them over the years since, religion formed the bedrock of their beliefs.Īnother interpretation is that Lynn was referring to the baby Blake held in his hands-or, rather, was not holding. Remember, she, Blake, and their friend Jessica attended Catholic school as children. I mean at least Miles was against enhanced mosters in the first game while Blake is, for the most part, facing normal yokels with. Lynn, on the brink of death, could have been referring to the absence of heaven or hell. The meaning behind those three words divided Outlast 2's fan base. Before she slips away, she says, "There's nothing there." Lynn dies after seeing the baby safely in Blake's hands. There, he finds Lynn, his wife, who gives birth while the storm reaches its crescendo. Lynn and the Babyįollowing a tidal wave of murderous cultists and hallucinations that made Blake (and you) question what was fact and what was fiction, Blake makes his way to the mines. If you have yet to see the ending for yourself, or want to talk it over with other players first, avert your eyes until later. It goes without saying that spoilers follow. We've studied the game's ending and compiled evidence to frame what seems to be the most popular explanation so far. Red Barrels crafted a survival-horror adventure that will keep fans talking for years, debating Blake's hallucinations and arguing over the fate of Lynn's baby. Many aspects of Outlast 2 remain open to interpretation. The catch is that those pieces can be arranged in different ways. The cults could have induced Lynn into an accelerated false pregnancy, or the microwave towers manifested the existence of the baby and pregnancy altogether.By the time Outlast 2 fades to black, developer Red Barrels has given you all the pieces to the game's ending. When Blake shows her the baby, Lynn says "There's nothing there," before passing away. As they weather through an apocalyptic storm, they find refuge in the chapel for Lynn to give birth. The next time that Blake see's Lynn is at the end of the game and she's full-term pregnant. Documents and journals throughout the game can support this theory, but anyone with a 5th grade understanding of biology would know that wouldn't work that fast. Lynn asks Blake not to ask her about what the cult members did to her, leaving the player to the interpretation of some kind of forced sexual act. When Blake and Lynn find each other the first time inside Temple Gate, they try and get away together but Lynn stops multiple times due to stomach pain. To describe these spoiled Jersey Shore doppelgangers as unrelatable and annoying is a massive understatement, and their cringe-worthy personalities would be a bigger detriment to the game if not for the fact that encounters with them are few and far between. Valve has admitted that they’ve increasingly lost interest in single-player games, even though they know there could’ve been a lot of money in taking the alternative route. Why Valve Refuses To Turn Portal Into A Trilogy But it appears the company has shifted away from large, single-player games over the years ( Half-Life Alyxnotwithstanding) further explaining why a Portal 3 is unlikely at this point. This may seem surprising, especially considering how much of a profit Valve stood to gain from turning any of these series into a trilogy, Portal included. Valve’s other big successes such as Dota, Half-Life, and Left4Dead have only ever seen a second installment, despite having strong fan bases that would love to see another game. For one, the company infamously stops its franchises with the second sequel. However, it appears as though Valve has no interest in creating a third Portal game, and for various reasons. RELATED: Educational Games (NOT Oregon Trail & Carmen Sandiego) Great For School But of course, there’s still a lot to work with in the Portal universe, so it would be easy enough for the developers to think of a new captivating storyline for a third installment. GLaDOS, everyone’s favorite passive-aggressive AI, ends up releasing Chell, appeasing gamers in the process. Portal 2 ended on a relatively happy note, so it doesn’t feel as though the franchise needs a third game in order to tie up loose ends. Unfortunately, given the trajectory Valve has taken in recent years, the likelihood of this series being turned into a trilogy is bleak. But now that it’s been almost a decade since the second Portal debuted, many wonder if Portal 3 will ever see the light of day. The first-person puzzle-platform game was such a hit amid consumers that it lead to a sequel, Portal 2, which released four years later in 2011. The game was ostensibly set in the Half-Life universe and following the adventures of Chell, a woman forced to undergo a variety of tests at the discretion of GLaDOS, a malicious AI that controls the Aperture Science Enrichment Center. Valve’s Portalwas originally released in 2007 to critical acclaim. Its basic purpose is to act as a gateway to the full Age of Rebellion rulebook and it’s another avenue for new gamers to get involved in the Star Wars RPG. Regardless, it’s handy for the extra dice, the map and the counters, and the PCs come in handy as templates for NPCs and quick, off-the-cuff characters in case the gaming group is in need of a speedy retainer. Existing gamers may want to skip this and go straight on to the main Age of Rebellion rulebook but completists and collectors, like myself, may want to get their hands on this to complete the set. Players will find the PCs useful in the adventure provided and may even get some use out of them in other adventures, but the boxset doesn’t really allow for any extended play outside of the limits of the box. This isn’t a complete game by any stretch of the imagination. Any experienced group worth their mettle should be able to make something of it. That’s fine for a new group who are learning the ropes, but for an experienced group and GM this might be a bit frustrating. It really is a set of linear routes and choices that depend on the PCs choosing rather specific outcomes to further the story and doesn’t leave much room for improvisation. In total you get the following:ĩ Destiny Tokens, 33 Character Tokens, and 7 Vehicle TokensĪs with the Edge of the Empire boxset you get a decent adventure that should last a few sessions, along with it’s downloadable follow-up ‘Operation Shadowpoint’ to stretch that out, but you don’t get a lot of leeway with the adventure. With the special dice for the game, cardboard counters (including four for the PCs in the boxset and two extras for the PCs you can download from the FFG website), counters and chips, the rulebook, adventure and a map, you get quite a lot in the box. It’s a step-by step instruction manual for new gamers to the hobby, and serves as an introduction to the new Age of Rebellion rulebook for existing players. The Age of Rebellion Beginner Game follows the same format as the earlier Edge of the Empire boxset.
